Default Don Best has ruined handicappers

That's my opinion.

Good solid cappers have become pawns to the DB screen. Watching for moves...looking for middles....figuring out who the BW's of the world are on...etc.
They have gotten so far away from actually handicapping games, they have forgoten how to put in the work needed to come up with an opinion on a game.

Screen watching is their new passion, when it used to be a labor of love digging in the dirt handicapping games. Times have sure changed. But change is not always good. I wonder how many used to do better doing their own work.

Now this opinion comes from a guy who has looked at that way of sports investing, but has never done it for real cash. He's just old school and likes it that way. The old way.

I wouldn't say it has ruined handicapping, just changed the way it is done for some people.

I still handicap NFL the way I always did, and shop for lines too of course.

The fact that the screen exists doesn't affect old school capping.

I agree Grandfather, seems too many guys are watching the lines versus doing their homework and trusting their gut. Line moves can be a productive startegey at times and other times its way off. I still do it the old fashioned way and I'm not old, I just would rather do it myself rather than be at the mercy of lines moves. I don't care what the world is playing but I do care about what information others gather to help me form my opinion. But to each his/her own and to me the main objective is to have fun and make a little money on the side following what I love anyway, sports!

i think a good handicapper can be influenced by the line moves. I good capper should not. if a capper likes a game and it moves with him, he may like it more, if it moves against him he may not play it, thats wrong, a good capper has to have discipline, he can not let anything influence him.

knuckle the don best screen, is a screen that displays lines, if a casino moves a line the screen reflects the change. i think its the best tool available, and any serious player or book should have it.
I do however miss the good old days when not that many people had the service, I remember telling the few people in my area "don't tell anyone about d b, before you know it, everyone and their dad will have it." From d'b's standpoint, i'm sure they want all the subscribers they can get, from our standpoint, we wish it was a big secret and no one no about it. if you want to be mad, blame the whole internet, there's alot of people that just go to a sportsbooks page and refresh every ten seconds.

In Feb I show 11 wagers where the line moved, I only consider early moves not late or close to game time moves.

I show 8 wins and 3 losses in these game. (17 games where not a significant move or it move back.)

2-0 in game I when against the move
6-3 with the move.

My capping tends to agree with the moves over time but…..

I cap the game then look at the move but if it is going the other way I look for injuries or other reasons but if I still like it I go with it. Serious guys move those lines and their opinion deserves respect but I do not always agree with them.

Cap your own but respect others seem prudent.

Steve

What do you mean by this? Let's say that you like a team at +6 when the books have the team at +4. If the line moves with you to +2, then of course you like the play more than you did at +4. On the other hand, if the line moves against you to +6 then you might not like the play anymore because the overlay has been wiped out.

Still in the driver's seat buddy, but big al and my good buddy Billy Coleman are still firing away with the bogus "10*" plays. Doing my best to stick with 2-3 Units per game and not use the fabricated 10* "Big Game". No one with discipline in this endeavor bets 2 or 3 hundred on 2 games, and then a Dime on another. Not if they want to survive. So why rate plays that way?

Ride the wave Jimmy! We're going for 10,000 points!!!

A contest is a contest and the rules should be used to the best advantage of the player. All the participants have to adhere to the same rules.

I just got back from my 12- day Panama trip tonight, and I hope to find time within the next week to prepare a detailed report on the country. However, I hate to disappoint the horn dogs, whoremongers, and Del Rey sexual addicts who frequent this site and expect nuggets of information from me regarding venues and women, but his trip was not taken with lowly hedonistic sexual pleasure in mind. Heavens no. This trip was taken with two goals in mind: First, as a selfless service to the offshore sportsbook industry, I decided to scope out the country as a potential site for sportsbooks and, second, on behalf of Reno's Charity, I devoted myself--selflessly again, of course,--to the process of donating money to poor, working girls. Further, with rare time available for deep introspection, I've come up with a brilliant analogy:

The Don Best Screen is to handicapping as prostitution is to sex. Prostitution has not ruined sex, and the DB Screen has not ruined handicapping.
