| TA I like your list. The "best" running back is not necessarily the top 5 of all time. Example: If your life depended on you picking up two yards who would you hand the ball to? Earl Campell Gale Sayers same question Barry Sanders Eric Dickerson I really think Earl belongs on the list because he had Brown like power and speed. But I like your 5 choices in the same order as you got them. |

| Always interesting, because there are so many different types of backs. What's your priority? My top 3: (1) Payton. Since he's the greatest football player ever, can't place him anywhere else. (2) Brown. The greatest -- if you HAVE to gain two yards on one play . . . or if you need some woman beaten up, thrown out of a window, etc. Otherwise (block? catch passes? throw the option?), see #1. (3) Sayers. Not for longevity, obviously, but the greatest RB supernova the game's ever seen. Indisputably the greatest open-field, breakaway runner, ever . . . as well as one of the top mudders of all time. The Kansas Comet, indeed . . . a shooting star. |

| Jim Brown: too much of an egomaniac to block . . . not a great receiver (to say the least) . . . and, uh, not real likely to throw the option pass. Payton was the whole package. As noted, it's contingent on what's most important to you at the time . . . two yards and a cloud of dust, or the whole magillah. If it's the whole magillah you're looking for, Payton retired that trophy, and the case is locked. Otherwise, Alan . . . Merry Christmas!
