| Police focus gambling allegations at Florida State on McPherson TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — An investigation into possible gambling at Florida State centers on former Seminole quarterback Adrian McPherson, who was dismissed from the team last month after he was charged in a stolen check scheme, officials said Thursday. University Vice President John Carnaghi said in a statement that police "are investigating rumors and heresay regarding a single, former football player, Adrian McPherson." "The investigation does not currently extend to any other student athletes at FSU," Carnaghi said. Florida State athletic director David Hart said last month he questioned McPherson about rumors of gambling or point shaving. "I asked questions that needed to be asked," Hart said. "There were no accusations, simply questions." McPherson's attorney, Grady Irvin Jr. of St. Petersburg, said his client has never bet on a sporting event. McPherson started four games this season, winning three. "We will not participate in this unbelievable rumor that is being fueled by persons known, persons unknown and a salivating media," Irvin said Thursday in a telephone interview with The Associated Press. "It's a nonissue. That's it. That's the end of the story." Concerned about the rumors of on-campus gambling, Florida State asked for assistance last month from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. The agency assigned members of its Tallahassee office along with investigators from more than one of its seven regional offices to assist. FDLE Commissioner Tim Moore said Thursday his agency's probe was being led by one of its most seasoned investigators. After a four-week investigation by FDLE and university police, no other students or athletes have been implicated. Authorities have questioned some of McPherson's teammates, as well as student trainers and managers in the investigation. University police chief Carey Drayton said police are working on two investigations, which he said may be related to one another. One of the investigations, Drayton said, was in connection with an unidentified informant alerting authorities that he was being shaken down over gambling debts. The other investigation is examining the persistent allegations that McPherson was involved in gambling, Drayton said. No arrests are imminent, Drayton said. "This is going to be an involved and lengthy process," he said. Coach Bobby Bowden said Thursday no one has spoken to him about any of his players. "I don't know of any involvement of any athlete," Bowden said. "I would be shocked if any of my players are involved in that. But you never know. You're just nearly scared to say. I haven't heard rumors or talk among our kids that anybody is involved in something like that. "Good gosh, that's the No. 1 priority in the NCAA right now. It's one of our biggest scares, but we cannot find anything." McPherson, Florida's "Mr. Basketball" and "Mr. Football" during the 2000-2001 school year, was dismissed Nov. 25 after he was charged with misdemeanor theft for allegedly stealing a blank check from R&R Truck Accessories in Tallahassee and felony grand theft for allegedly receiving stolen goods after the check was cashed. The check was later forged by someone and made out for $3,500 and cashed. The money has not been recovered. Florida State plays No. 4 Georgia in the Sugar Bowl on Jan. 1. |
