Yao Ming the next Magic Johnson?

According to everyone's favorite announcer Bill Walton who during the Houston/Indy game even compared one of Ming's moves to those of Pete Maravich.

Now somehow I've learned to actually laugh at the idiot Walton, but it's blasphamy to compare this guy to the great Magic Johnson (Maravich was before my time but I'm sure its just as ridiculous to compare him to Pete as well).

I think Billy had one too many drinks before this one....listening to the post game now....now being compared to Hakeem LOL....Bill is the definition of moron, no doubt.

Railbird 12-19-2002 04:30 AM

I agree with Bill, he is a revolutionary passer, and does so many things without the ball, the promblem is 99% of all nba fans, and about 60% of nba players know nothing about basketball. Yao Ming could save this pathetic leauge single handidly. This guy is the best player since Isiah Thomas, and the most entertaining player ever.

Holy Bull 12-19-2002 04:45 AM

Walton once claimed Michael Olawakandi was the combonation of Kareem and Wilt. He also once said Chris Gatling was the best inside player in the NBA.

Just imagine Bill Walton and Railbird broadcasting an NBA game together.

Yao Ming doesnt need the refs to be dominate, he is smartest player in the leauge by far, and he wont be a whoremonger like Magic and Jordan were. Yao already owns the best 5 passes this year, first watchable player in a long time.

Here's Jonny 12-19-2002 07:52 AM

Railbird

You are way too much man.

World Runner 12-19-2002 10:02 AM

Railbird,

It is a fact that Jordan is the greatest of all time. It cannot be disputed and it will never change.

RackMan 12-19-2002 12:00 PM

I love to read & hear people RIP "my guy" Bill Walton.

Remember this people...."when a true genius appears in this world, the DUNCES will be in confederacy against him."

Holy Bull...I am glad that somebody else besides me, wathced "Paper Clips" games, when Bill was the Color Guy. Bill just said suff, for shi&ts & gigles...come on, who watched the "Paper Clips" besides gamblers, their families, Holy Bull, & me???

By the way....Bill was trying to relate, that YAO brings his own style to the game, the same way Magic & Bird did. Dah!!

&, I am sure Stanford lowered it Law Shcool standards, by letting Bill attend, while he was injuried early in his NBA career...Stanford is the #1 Law School in the U.S. Yeah, they let dummies in....LOL!!!!!

World Runner 12-19-2002 12:32 PM

rackman, I think the same thing about Mel Kiper.

The man knows more about the sport of football than the entire population of the United states combined (me excluded)

But yet....people rip him constantly it seems. He's a walking encyclopedia of EVERYTHING football.

JohnnyDeMarco 12-19-2002 01:13 PM

Railbird,
For once I agree with you. Bill Walton also said that Sam Perkins was the "smartest" player to ever play the game.

timmy 12-19-2002 02:07 PM

its really not that difficult to admit that i was wrong about yao ming.

olympic, and their incredibly unique and stand up way of dealing sports lines? not yet.

YAO MING IS A GOOD PLAYER. FURTHERMORE, HE WILL ONLY GET BETTER.

after the all-star game i'll be buying lots of chinese food for the majority of the sportsbook managers here in curacao.

thats ok, i was dead on about shawn bradley years ago so i'm still batting .500 predicting future stiffs.

Picksix 12-19-2002 02:18 PM

You're a good man timmy.

You probably could've tried to wait a little longer and say he needs to do it over a longer period of time, but at some point I think everyone will have to admit he is not a bust. (me included) Now the question is, how good will he get?

timmy 12-19-2002 02:25 PM

pick six,

from even what little i've seen...

REAL GOOD.

jayhawk 12-19-2002 02:38 PM

I predicted he would be good but I'm only batting 50% too as I said that skinny kid from Navy would never amount to much. Or has David Robinson proved himself yet.

DoggieStyle 12-19-2002 02:51 PM

He's this good already.

and the passing.......

and he plays defense !

He is already one of the best players in the game today !

It is not a fact, it's a popular misperception.

Basketball is a team game where the goal is winning.

Individual talent is most intelligently assessed by an individual's ability to help a team win games.

Being surrounded by talent is NOT a talent, it's a lucky break.

Larry Bird had a greater impact on winning than MJ. Bird landed in Boston and instantly took them from bad to good. When he didn't play: bad again.

MJ's Bulls, when he arrived, made little improvement. It took years for the personnel around him to improve to the point where they could contend. And when he left to play baseball, they were still a good team. Conference semi's, I believe.

IOW, he added enough to a semifinalist team to make them champions. That's a valuable contribution, but don't kid yourself that MJ could make a loser into a winner. He can't do it now in Washington, either. He just isn't THAT good. And it isn't because he's lost that much game with age. He just never had THAT much game.

Bird could take a bad team to the title. And that's the real test.

nino brown 12-19-2002 07:42 PM

while i will not dispute jordans greatness, he was also the mealticket of the league. the last time he fouled out in a game was in 1991. his marketing power was very significant in his winning so many championships. even in his old age, he probably plays in front of a sold out crowd every night.

Greedo 12-19-2002 07:46 PM

Oakley, you opinion of the WORLD'S GREATEST ANNOUNCER worries me. Bill Walton will go down with the Chick Hearns, the Vinc Scully's, the Foster Hewitts among the pantheon of all timers.

As a matter of fact, if I had to use just one word to capture your opinion, it would be....TERRIBLE, JUST TERRIBLE (said in a Waltonian drawwwl)

Picksix 12-19-2002 07:52 PM

Tough to compare Bird and Jordan. Tougher to comare their teams. Although I would guess that Bird played with twice as many Hall of Famers while playing in Boston than MJ did in Chi.
