Default The Betting Starts Young For These Kids...NICE!

Nearly two dozen 8th graders at a Glenview middle school will have to write essays on the evils of gambling after they were caught allegedly placing bets of $2 to $10 each on professional sporting events in school hallways and classrooms and during lunch period, officials disclosed today.

The pupils at Springman Middle School were caught after a parent learned about the betting activity and alerted school officials just before Thanksgiving break, said Brett Clark, spokesman for Glenview School District 34.

The following Monday, a school police liaison officer discovered students exchanging money as they huddled near a locker, Clark said.

"One was collecting money from bets that weekend," Clark said. "Money was changing hands in the hallway. The investigation started, and it went from there."

Four youths were identified as the most involved. They were taking bets and communicating with others over the Internet, using instant messaging from computers at home. They had recruited another 16 students who were betting on professional football, hockey, soccer and basketball games, Clark said.

School officials sent a letter home to all Springman parents, stating, "Student involvement ranged from 'one-time betting' to ongoing, daily activity ... We have discussed the matter with these students and have determined appropriate consequences that will include an educational component."

Each of the 20 pupils will have to write an essay on the negative effects of gambling and will be required to watch a video produced by the Outreach Foundation for Problem and Compulsive Gamblers, based in Downers Grove, Clark said.

A spokesman for Outreach, which provides educational programs at high schools statewide, said the numbers of youth gamblers are on the rise.

Poor kids won't be able to get any action down on the Bowl games now. I'm sure they were just doing it to buy their parents XMas presents.

Four ringleaders need to be publicly recognized for their contribution to the districts curriculum. Semester credits in computer studies, accounting, sociology are in order for these enterprising youth.Better yet put them in charge of the districts investment portfolio.

Funny, I was creating soccer parlay cards in grade 7 and had 10-15 people playing with me... Grade 8 was a little tricky, me and a buddy shared tickets in the state run lotery and one time hit on 12 of 13. Word got out in the neighbourhood and we were beaten up by a local gang to steal the ticket off us. Black eyed and bruised all over we eventually collected on what was then the equivalent of $3

Grade 8...I got caught "slinging" bits of erasers with a big rubberband. Had to wirte, in pencil, I Will Not Throw Erasers, 1,000 times. Showed it to the principle (nun) and then she says, "Now erase it and you'll know what they are for."

Grade 9...In High School 1 month and started booking the World Series...much safer.

I was pitching quarters in the 7th grade, got caught in the 9th grade, almost suspended, had to do a Saturday Workshop...an 8 hour penance if you will...that's when it all started.
