SCOTTSDALE - Former Cardinals safety Tommy Bennett was arrested Friday for failing to appear in court on charges of possession of drug paraphernalia and driving with a suspended license.
Bennett, 29, was charged with possession in August after police found his black Chevy Suburban blocking traffic at 2 a.m. in an alley behind popular after-hours bar Mickey's Hangover. Bennett was inside the bar, and the officers found a baggie of cocaine on the center console, Scottsdale Police spokesman Scott Reed said. Police also discovered a straw and a rolled up dollar bill, both with cocaine residue, in his pocket.
The Cardinals released Bennett in August 2001, and he signed with the Detroit Lions.
He was suspended for the final four games of the 2001 season for violating the NFL's steroid-use policy. The Lions did not renew his contract.
A warrant for his arrest has also been issued in Chandler for failure to appear three times on charges of driving at excessive speeds.
Bennett, who listed the Lions as his employer on his booking sheet, is scheduled to appear in Scottsdale city court today.
