Manhattan Power Plant Explosion Leaves Power Outage

NEW YORK (Reuters) - An electrical transformer at a Manhattan power plant exploded on Saturday, causing the partial collapse of a roof over a Consolidated Edison Inc. plant and power outages in lower Manhattan.



Reuters reporters on the scene said a large plume of black smoke trailed from the power plant on the city's lower east side to the southern tip of Manhattan. There was no immediate word of causalities or the scope of the power outage.

New York firefighters and police called a "Level 3" alert as a precaution against possible terrorist activity, but there was no immediate indication of foul play.
