Default Jaret Wright (P) SD

Wright, currently being considered for the closer's role in the absence of Trevor Hoffman, faced hitters for the first time this spring. He received rave reviews from general manager Kevin Towers, reports the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Wright turned in another impressive performance Saturday. Pitching coach Greg Booker said "I really like how Jaret is in tune with his body and delivery," reports the San Diego Union-Tribune.

I wouldn't trust Wright to close, let alone sell cottoncandy in the stands...

Trevor Hoffman has decided to undergo surgery later this week, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. Padres GM Kevin Towers expects Hoffman to return near the All-Star break. Hoffman said doctors will shave one-half inch off the end of his clavicle near the top of his shoulder. However, he recently learned that a tear in his rotator cuff wasn't as severe as thought, meaning it won't be surgically-repaired. If that had needed to be fixed as well, Hoffman would have missed the entire 2003 season.

Trevor Hoffman will have surgery to repair a bone in his throwing shoulder and will miss at least the first half of the season.
Hoffman wouldn't set a timetable for his recovery, but GM Kevin Towers hopes to have his closer back after the All-Star break. In the meantime, Jay Witasick is the favorites for saves with Brandon Villafuerte a strong No. 2. The Padres have also been impressed with Jaret Wright and would consider using him as a closer if he he has a good spring.

The Padres have some interest in acquiring Todd Jones from the Rockies and making him their closer.
We don't see any reason for the Padres to employ a $3 million closer this year, but at least they wouldn't have to give up any real talent in order to acquire Jones from the Rockies. Source: San Diego Union-Tribune

Closer candidates Jay Witasick, Brandon Villafuerte and Jaret Wright all pitched perfect innings for the Padres today.
Witasick and Villafuerte each struck out two batters. Wright fanned one.

Jaret Wright struggled today in his second appearance of the spring, allowing four runs -- three earned -- in an inning of work.
San Diego's other closer candidates, Jay Witasick and Brandon Villafuerte, both pitched scoreless innings. Villafuerte got the save by pitching the ninth, but that's not something that should be taken as a sign of things to come.

Witasick had great numbers when he was with the Padres a couple years ago. He was one of the best set up men in baseball. That doesn't mean he will be a good closer, but I have more faith in him than Wright.

I think Wright would have the right attitude to get it done(those Empire League athletes from So. Cal are tough) I'm just not sure if he has the stuff after all his troubles.

Jaret Wright strained his left oblique muscle during today's game and is expected to miss 7-10 days.
Wright hasn't been pitching well, so this injury could jeopardize his chances of making the team. Although Wright has been talked up as a potential closer, there's little reason to be optimistic about him right now.
