| New York 60 @ Washington 95 I love this Washington team, bunch of talent up and down the roster. Alana Beard made her first 11 shots finishing with 25 points. The most impressive part of their win was they only got 2 points from Nikki Teasley and 12 from Delisha Milton-Jones and still scored over 90 points. This Washington team can cause problems from teams- one sign of concern from last night was they committed 29 fouls, didn't cost them against NY but could cause them trouble against better competition. This is going to be a very long season for the NY Liberty.. Again relying on Shemka Christon WILL NOT WORK, she shot 6-18 last night. Becky Hammon was also quiet only taking 5 shots scoring only 7 points. This is a team to avoid at least for the first half of the season. LA 72 @ Charlotte 65 Well despite what I had read Chamique Holdsclaw was inactive last night and again it all fell on lisa leslie's shoulders to get the job done. She was 11-16 from the field for 27 points and added 16 rebounds- the Sparks go as far as Leslie takes them at this point. Tamara Moore scored a career high 14 points and played 35 minutes, a huge difference from her limited role with NY last year were she appeared in 7 games and averaged under 7 minutes a game. The Sparks were very lucky to sneak away with a win as this game was tied at 65 with under 50 seconds to go. When Holdsclaw returns it will add stability and a scoring threat for the Sparks but at this point the Sparks are a tough team to get a read on. The Sting led by 4 at halftime but being outscored 21-7 in the 3rd Q put Charlotte behind the 8-ball. Charlotte gives an effort every time out but simply they don't have the talent to win games at this point. Monique Currie was their game high scorer with 19 getting 11 points at the FT line. stat of the night: Rebounds LA 46 Charlotte 27.. tough to win many games getting out-rebounded by 19.. Indiana 62 @ San Antonio 53 Very hard fought road win by the Fever. Their games this season will not be pretty they shot under 30 % in their first win and shot 39% last night including a brutal 1-13 from 3 pt land. Once again Tameka Catchings carried this team with 23 pts and 9 rebs, Tameka Whitmore had more of a pressence adding 16 points. They were very solid on defense holding SA to 53 points and 34% shooting. The only concern is their 1-13 from behind the arc including Anna DeForge's 0-4- that will improve as the season goes on. The 2nd Q was a nightmare for the Silver Stars are they only put up 5 points, Shannon Johnson was buried by the Fever defense as she had only 3 assists and 0 points. Sophie Young continues her push for ROY as she put in 12 pts with 10 rebs. The problem for SA last night was they were a two person team other than Young and Vickie Johnson the Stars shot 10-36 certainly a difference from their road win at Houston a few days ago. The Stars came back down to earth last night but I still believe they are better than they showed and their next game hosting LA on Thursday should be a good one. Sacramento 76 @ Chicago 63 Monarchs kept on rolling as they are picking up where they left off last season- and all this is without DeMyra Walker. Nicole Powell was 8-13 from the field including 3 3-ptrs and had a game high 19. The only minor flaw with this team is their poor ft shooting which could cost them down the line.. they were 13-20 last night. I finally figured out Chicago's main problem last night-- they have no main scorer to rely on, last night their game high scorer only had 11. Also no one on the team played more than 28 minutes, at this point there is still a lot of tweaking to be done to set the lineup and rotations, defineatly a team to stay away from and just observe for a little while. Connecticut 81 @ Minnesota 69 The final score is quite misleading as this game was back and forth all night until Conn finally put it away with a 26-10 4th Q. Katie Douglas tied her career high with 28 points- a night where Nykesha Sales shot 4-11 from the field and 0-4 from 3-pt land. It seems somebody is always stepping up on this Sun team as rookie Erin Phillips also added 13. Very impressive game for Minnesota, they hung with one of the best teams in the league for 30 minutes-- too bad for them the game is 40 minutes long. Front runner for Rookie of the year Seimone Augustus lived up to the hype putting in 21. The problem was the next highest scorer only had 10. Minnesota grabbed 15 offensive boards leading to them taking a total of 74 field goal attempts. Tough to judge a team on just 1 game but this Minnesota team is better than last year and tonight's game in Detroit is an interesting one. Houston 84 @ Seattle 59 Bizzaro world? nah it's just the wnba In all honesty I wasn't surprised to see Houston win but to see Houston dominate Seattle was simply amazing. Houston played the perfect game against Seattle. Every time Lauren Jackson touched the ball there were at least 2 Comets putting pressure on her which lead to a 4-13 shooting night for her. Tina Thompson rebounded from her 2-12 shooting night going 7-10, 3-4 from beyond the arc scoring a game high 19 Dominque Canty also added 19 which was a huge improvement from her 6 pt game earlier. Sheryl Swoopes didn't have to do it all herself but she did add 15, Houston as a team shot 57.6% Seattle shot a very poor 32%, and 2-17 beyond the arc (11.8%) you just don't expect to see #'s that low from this team even against a good D in Houston. Wendy Palmer Daniel seemed to just disappear last night taking only 6 shots scoring 5 points and only grabbing 5 points. I expect a big game out of Seattle on Thursday when they play the no-defense Phoenix Mercury. |
