Default Saturday Night NBA Esoterics

CLEVELAND 106, MIAMI 99
Approximate Tempo: 94 possessions
Synergy: Miami 96, Cleveland 99
Notes: Both teams tended to put the ball in the hands of their star and let him do all the work. It was fun to watch...unless you had Miami +6 and watched them lead the whole game before giving away the cover in the last 90 seconds. If you had Cleveland, you reversed the emotions with that late rally.

MILWAUKEE 96, INDIANA 89
Approximate Tempo: 87 possessions (very slow)
Synergy: Indiana 121, MIlwaukee 100
Notes: This turned into a very conservative playoff style game in the fourth quarter. It was noted in the MESS HALL that Milwaukee only committed 2 turnovers. It's easier to do that in a halfcourt game where you just pass the ball around awhile before shooting. But...it was a sharp game, and they showed they know how to clamp down and win a game like this. That's big news on a night when they were tired...and they were catching Indiana off a couple of losses. You gottal love the synergy number for Indiana. Peja has a knack for doing that for a team. He hits his shot when you pass it to him...he passes to the guy who's going to hit the shot. The whole team tries to do that. Didn't work tonight.

CHICAGO 100, BOSTON 94
Approximate Tempo: 100 possessions (very fast)
Synergy: Boston 111, Chicago 97
Notes: Kind of a weird game. Boston had a big lead at the half. But...since we knew that Chicago was trying to win to make the playoffs...and we knew that Boston blew a big second half lead against Chicago last week, the Bulls made some sense at the second half line. They came all the way back to cover the game spread as well as the second half spread. The total stayed Under even with that crazy spread because the shooting was inconsistent. The good news...now we've got Boston off a straight up loss...so we can look at them in the 1Q and 1H of their next game.

SAN ANTONIO 106, WASHINGTON 99
Approximate Tempo: 106 possessions (insanely fast)
Synergy: Wasington 99, San Antonio 103
Notes: The refs were whistle crazy. That has a way of creating fast tempo's just because there's more time for possessions when the clock never runs. San Antonio actually doesn't mind running with running teams when Parker and Ginobili are both healthy. The synergy was low for San Antonio considering the caliber of defense they were playing though. The Spurs never came close to covering the -11.

The Utah/Portland game was late. Utah led by 13 at the half...not surprising because they've been grabbing the winnable games by the throat early. They blew off the second half at the Clippers last night. We didn't get a chance to talk about the NBA much today with so much going on in the Dance. Hope you at least thought about the Jazz for a fast starter here.

I'll try to pick up two divisions tomorrow for the "On the Fly" segment. FEEL FREE AT ANY TIME TO ADD YOUR THOUGHTS TO THOSE THREADS lol....

Default Saturday Night NBA Esoterics

Finishing off Saturday night...

UTAH 102, PORTLAND 89
Approximate Tempo: 90 possessions
Synergy: Utah 104, Portland 90
Notes: Utah blew off the Clippers game so they could get this win. They seem to match up very well against teams who have weaknesses. The offense will show synergy against teams who have bad synergy defenses. The defense will shut down teams who have bad synergy offenses. Lets keep monitoring their schedule. Asking them to take care of business in winnable games has been a sound strategy since we started paying attention to them here in the TANK. And, frankly, anybody who NEEDS to beat Portland is doing so by double digits against single digit lines in that arena.
