Default limit or stop orders on sports

Are there books that allow limit or stop orders on sports bets? For example, why can't you put a "good until cancelled" limit order on the Panthers +7 1/2 -110 when they are at +7 -110 during the week? Or if you see Georgetown +5' against the Wolfpack and want to sit hoping the line will move to 6 but are afraid of a big move the other way, can you stop it out at 5?

Any reason books won't offer something like that is available for the financial markets?

If Count Zero can put this in layman's terms for me, I will be able to impress my friends down here at the loading dock, and may be so indebted that I stop voting Republican...

Do you want the linesmaker knowing where everyone is leaning before he has to hang that number?

How do you decide who gets first shot at the number? Everyone in the world is going to be putting in orders at key numbers for NFL.

Puts too much info in the hands of the bookmaker.

DG-- great response-- thanks! I have some additional thoughts

Do you want the linesmaker knowing where everyone is leaning before he has to hang that number?

If I get a plus 2 instead of a +1 1/2, then I don't care if he knows

How do you decide who gets first shot at the number? Everyone in the world is going to be putting in orders at key numbers for NFL.

I guess the market forces decide. If there is too strong of a buy position on that key number, then it never does hit that key number. Also on the key numbers, they could fill a +7 -120, then a +7 -115, then -110, etc.

Maybe so. That's the argument I keep coming back to. But it seems like it might work to a book's advantage if they do it and another book doesn't-- if the book sees a competitor move a line by 1/2 point, they have an idea of how much action they'll have if they move the line to that number. I'm not sure if that leaves them stuck on the number they are on, or allows them to time adjusting the line to where the market is going.

The loading dock? Didn't the Republicans outsource that job months ago?

Just kidding. I'll be right there with you voting Republican all the way, my friend. All of us will, once they get those new Diebold electronic "voting" machines up and running.

Count--

I had 2 guys from Delhi hired to replace my 15 union boys on the loading dock, but Gray Davis denied me the HB-1's and threatened to let Local 18 shut me down. At least I can stop sending my yearly "sack o' cash" to Willie Brown to help keep his ex girlfriends gainfully employed-- now there was a crook any way you cut it. Scary thing is the new mayor attended the same high school I did-- FIVE YEARS AFTERWARD....

You know, I've got a feeling this "limit order" question has an obvious answer and has been covered at MW before by some of the guys a step ahead of me on the learning curve who've passed through here-- back to the search function I go.

Is JJ Gold to Major Wager what "The Swami" was to talksport? What the heck is he selling anyway?

Not even close. JJ is just a guy with too much time on his hands.

very interesting idea cobramoon,
you can do that sort of thing on betting exchanges, often the spreads are fixed it's just the prices that fluctuate,
but some are offering various spreads on the same game.
