Database Talk

I am currently working on putting together a dataset for the NFL in excel format. WHat I eventually want to do is to transfer it to some sort of Databse platform, then go to work, trying different things, more really to get a grip on the ins and outs of how databases work.

It will take me a little while to do the inputting work(unless anyone knows of any cool techiegeeky thing that can do it for me [img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif[/img] ) but once done, would anyone be willing to give me any ideas on how to progress with the Database. Stuff like, which program is the best to use, ways of constructing data etc.

IMO would be an interesting topic which could utilise the Chat Room, sort of a DB school so to speak.

Any input??

CZ alluded to the forum that Peep runs ¨across the street¨at therx.com. ´He leads discussions on Microsoft Access which is the database most compatible with Excel. If you´re not familiar with that resources I would definitely suggest you take a look at it.

It would be great if a parallel discussion happened here, and don´t give up on us! But it would be foolish to ignore this already established place for asking the kinds of questions you seem to want to ask.

I think that j's suggestion is a great one. Go get the info and help the RX business AND THAN POST BACK HERE AND GIVE US THE RESULTS............

MS Access would definitely be the way to go imo. if you have any friends who are programmers they could from access download webpages and parse your data directly into a table, if the pages have some uniformity to them. i've done this with access for several different sports and it saves alot of time.

Access is pretty easy to program simple databases in. You can buy an easy to follow programming book at your local university. I took an Access programming class a couple of years ago and the professor said just go through the book. He didnt teach at all. He was basically there to answer questions we were too lazy to look up ourselves.
