Vocabulary question...... The hockey season is almost upon us and I have been given four future picks to win the Stanley Cup. A couple of the picks, the handicapper called "overlays"...... I should know this but what is he talking about? In this situation, WHAT IS AN OVERLAY??? Thanks, like I said, I should know this... GottaWinToday

Basically means the person is saying the teams chances are better than the odds. To use a horse racing analogy, if I think a horse should be 5-1 and he is 8-1 then he is an overlay. Conversely, if the horse is 3-1 he is an underlay.

I don't know what hockey future you are thinking about , but an overlay in terms of team wins could be: The Over on team A is 30 wins, but the guy you are getting the information from says the team should win 45 matches. So the overlay is 15 games in your favor by taking the Over if the guy capped it right.
