Default Does anyone know...

....if there is a site that has the following information already compiled:

Listing team by team of offensive yards gained, with average yards per game calculated vs. league average

and team by team defensive yards yielded, with average yards per game vs. league average. Say for a two year period?

Does anyone here use this +/- analysis to pick upset games? If so, have you had success?

Thanks.

MX:

USAToday had that info on it's site last year. Can't find it this year, though.

Stats for two years will not be posted anywhere, everyone lists stats for year-to-date on present year.

Bud Goode (http://www.he.net/~budsport/) lists teams using his killer stat (yards per pass atempt) in +/- fashion. Over the last 10 years or so, YPPassAtt in the NFL has been about the best single stat you can use.

KOTS,

Rats! I just checked out that site and it is quite interesting - but doesn't really have the totals I need.

The system I am interested in checking out is basically a "variance position from league norm". All that is required is average yards gained - using a 2 year period - and comparing that to league average per game. This gives a +/- variance. Then do the same thing on the defensive side of the ball using average yards yielded and comparing to league norm, also yielding a +/- variance.

Still wondering if anyone here has tried this for picking upsets?

If you want to trial that system might want to try one of those NFL encylopedias that go year by year.

Possibly a preaseason betting mag like Phil Steele might have this?

AV,

Thanks for the suggestion - it's a great idea! Would be simple to compile the info. If I get it together I will try to post it here with the formula so we can look at it and see how it might work out. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

...ummm, maybe I can save you the trouble. Several time in the last several years I've tried something that is total yards related as you say, and it never came to much.

YdsPer Pass Att is about the single best stat you're gonna find that has worked for a number of years...

...unless Reno and his programmer pal find the Holy Grail in Yards Per Point. And we'll find that out when he wins the Hilton contest...

Oh, and I've got just about every mag, guide, etc that publish those kinds of stats...

madameX, check out "the ferret" at jimsquest.com i think you can find what you want. he has a ton of stats that i think most people don't use. it does not give you a two or three year avg so you will have to do the math. 29.95 you can not go wrong. program goes back to 96. jim based this program on Bud Goode idea about stats. i find it very usefull.

hiptwo,

Thanks so much for turning me on to that site! I didn't see your post till late last evening, so I downloaded it then and just now have had a chance to play with it a bit. What a program!!! Plus it seems pretty convenient to use, as I am working my way through it.

I am glad to hear you are using it, as I may need to ask you some questions about it later!

MadameX, if your a registered user Jim has a link "the Ferret den" and you should have gotten an e-mail with a password. all he ask is you don't give the password out. when the season starts you can find a lot of good info. there.
