Default Survey....american presidents

As a relatively ignorant canuck re american
presidents I was just wondering who y'all
consider to be the smartest.

Was'nt Carter a nuclear physicist as well as
a peanut farmer...Now thats strange

Really a tough one. Jefferson was one of the greatest architects of his era. Hayes
(I think it was Hayes at least) not only served as president but also had perhaps one of the sharpest legal minds of his time and was the only american president to also serve on the supreme court.

Pierre Trudeau could out wit any of the presidents. But, my pick would be Ronald Reagan. If an actor can be president of the USA and get away with it, it gets my vote!

the question was which president was the smartest. i'm assuming you misread it if GW was the answer he is good at getting smart people in important positions though, which is important.

ok i read the other one, my mistake

i think it was taft who was also a supreme court justice.

Sandwedge - you are right, Taft was Chief Justice of the Supreme Court after he was President.

Fishead - Didn't think about Hoover at first, and there was a great documentary last week on the building of Hoover Dam. Hoover was really a great man, an brilliant engineer who had earned a reputation as a super administrator in delivering relief to Russia after WWI, and for other positions. He was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.

I think Reagan is way underrated, a true overlay if you will. He was and actor, but so what? He was chosen by his peers to be president of the SAG, and his results as US President make him the best of the latter half of the 20th century in my estimation. Couldn't do that without at least half a brain.

I can't think of a DUMB president. I think you have to be pretty smart just to be in a position to GET the job.

Clinton was a goddammed genius. That he could fool so many people for so long...

George W. isn't a dope. Just because Leno and Letterman and Dennis Miller portray him that way in their jokes doesn't make it so. Miller, after delivering his first few "Bush is a dope" jokes, actually looked into the camera and APOLOGIZED to Bush. "Sorry, George. But as far as the jokes go, Clinton was a sex fiend, and you're a dope. I don't believe it, but that's the way it's gonna be."

Taft was the Supreme Court Justice.

Hamilton WASN'T A PRESIDENT.

If I had to pick the smartest, I'd put my money on Jefferson. TJ founded colleges. I think he had something to do with the creation of the Constitution and/or Declaration of Independence. That's strong.

Lincoln had a way with words that could bring tears to your eyes. Pop in a copy of "Saving Private Ryan", and listen to Gen. Marshall read that letter Lincoln wrote. I suppose it's possible that presidents had speechwriters then, too, but Abe's been getting credit for everything else attributed to him, so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt.

And don't forget Jeb Bartlett. Dude speaks Latin, knows the Bible chapter and verse, can quote Homer, da Vinci, Dante, Aristotle, or any other fancy name you've ever heard of (I apologize to those who don't watch "The West Wing", and have no idea what I'm talking about).

The dumbest? How does William Henry Harrison grab ya? Dude refused to wear an overcoat at his rainy inauguration ceremony, caught pneumonia, and was dead in a month. Vice-President Tyler, come on down!

maybe not. but if he were a contest on "who wants to be a millionaire?" i would bet the under on whether he would win >$1000 or <$1000. and this is from someone who has never voted for a democrat for president, so it's not a politically motivated opinion.

Gotta be Bill Clinton. The guy is basically white trash with no morals, yet would have been elected for a third term if he could have ran.

I'm not American but from what I've heard Nixon was quite intelligent.

BTW, what ever happened to Billy Carter? I used to like him. Any man that could get totally plastered on beer and then relieve himself on the waling wall will go down in history for chutzpah. Hell he could have been a great spokesman for the rednecks of America. .

Too bad smarts don't translate into performance. Heaven knows Wilson was
smart, but WWI and the League of Nations
battle broke him down . . . and I can't
think of one twentieth-century chief
executive who found himself on the
flat-out WRONG side of more major issues
of his time. Hoover was a tremendously-
accomplished individual, but couldn't
see the runaway freight even when it was
inches away from him, and coming on . . .
