FIRST ROUND PREVIEWS

Pepperdine (8): 47% on defense, 6 of 16 on offensive treys
San Diego (5): 49% on defense, 8 of 20 on offensive treys

Pepperdine won by 1 point at home, San Diego won by 13 points at home...suggesting San Diego by 6 on a neutral floor. The totals landed on 109 and 155...again, a lot of volatility in this sport. San Diego has the edge on treys in our numbers, but the worst defense. That defense should cut the advantage by half or so. Pepperdine comes in on a 3-0 ATS run, but has lost its last 7 games straight up. YOu'll have to determine if that's a hot streak or a cold streak! San Diego is 0-6 ATS its last six games, 1-5 straight up...which is definitely a cold streak. The West Coast and Sun Belt have ugly teams playing each other today...the way the Missouri Valley did yesterday. There are probably better opportunities in the later rounds unless you know for sure one team is going to show up and the other isn't. It's hard to see either California team being particularly motivated up in Washington...just to earn the right to lose to San Francisco the next night. That might signal an Under.

Portland (7): 47% on defense, 6 of 16 on offensive treys
Santa Clara (6): 42% on defense, 5 of 16 on offensive treys

Santa Clara won the regular season meetings by 10 and 24 (136 and 164)...which is a bit extreme for teams who are so close together in the seedings. Santa Clara has a much better defense...which is probably why they dominated head to head. But, Portland has a much shorter trip to this site...and has double revenge. Both teams are 3-1 ATS their last four board games. The winner here plays St. Mary's tomorrow night.

San Diego has the single best way to defend Morrisson--they have covered up Gonzaga and Morrison twice. Now they come in off two games in two days to play the lid lifter at Gonzaga---anybody else think this is a disaster waiting to happen. Seems to me Gonzaga may win this as they please.

In the night cap--I think St. Mary's is clearly better.

This was another conference that had to go on the back burner over the weekend. I know a lot of you night owls were watching and commenting on action in the last round up in the Mess Hall

CHAMPIONSHIP PREVIEW
Loyola (2): 45% on defense, 5 of 14 on offensive treys
Gonzaga (1): 43% on defense, 6 of 15 on offensive treys

Gonzaga won by 9 on the road and 12 at home in the regular season. Remember this is a home game here as they host the tourney. Totals landed on 149 and 172. The brackets of this tourney were staggered to favor the top seeds, so each team has only played one game so far. We didn't get a chance to post those numbers yet because the site was down a lot earlier with the software switch:

GONZAGA 96, SAN DIEGO 92 (in OT)
Shooting: Gonzaga 52%, San Diego 48%
Rebounds: Gonzaga 36, San Diego 27
Treys: Gonzaga 9 of 17, San Diego 10 of 27

LOYOLA 66, ST. MARY'S 63
Shooting: Loyola 44%, St. Mary's 41%
Rebounds: Loyola 42, St. Mary's 28
Treys: Loyola 3 of 9, St. Mary's 5 of 22

Gonzaga has had trouble living up to pointspread expectations lately. They're 4-9 ATS their last 13 games, and 7-15 ATS their last 22 games. This makes them one of the most overrated teams in the country during that period. Loyola would seem to match up reasonably well in terms of defense and rebounding...at least in terms of facing a double digit spread. So...if Gonzaga continues to be indifferent on offense, it can be a game. The danger with the dog is that they don't have much of a three-point game...so they're not going to be good at coming from behind if Gonzaga starts well. Gonzaga had a rare good first half against San Diego last night...but the dog came back thanks to some trey production.

If you're of the belief that championship games are lower scoring than others because of the pressure, fatigue, and the tendency of coaches to micromanage in games like that...then the total near 150 might look too high. Loyola does seem to prefer a slower game. This doesn't fit the parameters we've been using up in the Mess Hall to isolate ideal Under games though. Just something to think about.
