| 21-23 -6.34 units My favorite tourney for the year, let's hope i can make some inraods on my posting record. Day 1 Ulihrach v Mantilla Both have had very good seasons so far with Mantilla playing in the vein of form of previous years and Ulihrach reaching a new level, Mantilla is more suited ojn clay, but i really believe Ulihrach is a future Top 20 player and he is capable of handling the spaniard, and injury cloud does lurk over Ulihrcah , so if he pulls out i hope it's in the first set. Hrbaty v Gaudio Both in poor form, Hrbaty was a semi-finalist here two years ago, whilst Gaudio has huge potential, once again the price attracts here, with $2.50 Hrbaty hard to avoid. Saulnier v Gonzalez Have been very disappointed with the progress of Gonazalez this year, expected big things and he has certainly not delivered. Local boy Saulnier is rock solid and should prove too strong. Pavel v Pioline Despite his home town crowd, Pioline is undermatched i believe in todays' encounter against Pavel. Both will play agressive claycourt tennis and keep the points short, which should suit Pavel, who's fitness isn't on par at this level, nonetheless he is proving himself to be a very dangerous player on this surface, and should be favored in this match. Enqvist v Ilie Happy to take $1.57 that Ilie will jump out of bed on the wrong foot and never get a look in, Enqvist has the skills to handle him, even if he does. Canas v Rochus Don't rate Christophe Rochus at all, Canas will simply wear him out. Popp v Chang The big German might not exactly be suited on this surface, but Chang is not the player he once was , and really has a very poor record in this tournament since his victory 12 years ago. Majoli v Grande Former Champion back in some semblance of form , should be much too good for agressive and illsuited Rita Grande. Kremer v Gagliardi I'm a big fan of Kremer, can't see her roubled here. | this is part of my preview, check my profile for the URL to find the remainder French Open First Round The opening days of a Grand Slam are often a goldmine for punters - with so many matches on offer, bookies can let their guard down on a handful of games, and the smart players are there to cash in. But which ones are they? Gustavo Kuerten v Guillermo Coria h2h 1-0 Kuerten This is the worst opening draw either player could have imagined. Coria is 13th on the Champions Race, and probably the most dangerous unseeded player in the draw. He has an enormous amount of talent and will be a player at the top level for many years to come. Kuerten is the reigning champion, number one seed and has been simply awesome on clay in the past twelve months. I expect the winner of this match to make the semi-final against Ferrero. I can't make a selection, I am a big wrap for both players and the odds seem about right at the general 1.20/4.00 mark. This one will have to be on centre court, sit back and enjoy it. Arnaud Clement v Mariano Puerta h2h 2-1 Puerta The Australian Open finalist will need all the patriotic support he can find if he is to reverse last week's loss to Mariano Puerta. Clement is not at home on clay, he prefers much firmer footing and his clay form this season has not been great, just 5-5, with losses to Golmard, Luzzi, Moya, Puerta and Ulihrach. His record at Roland Garros in the past three years does not inspire confidence either, with the second round being his longest stay. Puerta has not done much in 2001, suffering from a nagging wrist injury he has not even won a single ATP match on clay this year. However he was one of the best five players on clay in 2001. He showed signs of returning to from at the World Team Cup last week, defeating Gambill and Clement before losing to Kafelnikoc in three tough sets. This is a guy that loves the clay and will dish it up to Clement. Carib put up a ridiculous price of 2.45 for Puerta, and it was gone in no time. Take any price better than 1.90 for the Argentine, and take a good look at how match fit he looks - he could just be a smokey for the title. 6pts Puerta at 2.00 William Hill Paul-Henri Mathieu v Lleyton Hewitt Most people will have never heard of this Mathieu kid, look out for him in the future. He is the reigning junior champion at Roland Garros. He lacks the maturity to test Hewitt fully at this stage, but if Hewitt doesn't play near his best, he could be in for a decent fight. Don't go risking your house at the short price on Hewitt. Gaston Gaudio v Dominik Hrbaty h2h 1-0 Hrbaty Gaudio is a highly-rated Argentine who had impressive form early in 2001 in South America and even on the hardcourts in Miami, but since travelling to Europe, his form has dropped away. He reached the final in Vina Del Mar (l. to Coria), semi in Buenos Aires (l. to Acasuso) and then the quarters in Masters Series Miami (l. to Gambill), but in Europe, he has fallen to Henman, Kratochvil, Lapentti and Squillari. Before the loss to Squillari in Hamburg, he did manage to overcome Mariano Puerta and Marat Safin, two players who have been ranked higher than Gaudio ever has, but both of whom have been struggling for form. Hrbaty reached the semi-finals here in 1999, but his clay form this season can aptly be dsescribed as dreadful. First-round losses to Costa, Bruguera, Ferreira, Haas and Ljubicic, all in straight sets. I can never get this guy right - he has brilliant records against Safin & Kafelnikov, but loses a lot of matches that he shouldn't. There was as much as 2.60 available for Hrbaty (first call at WSEX), which is certainly overs, but that was soon crunched. Surrey's offer of 2.50 is still there, but I can't touch this match, other than to hope for Gaudio, one of my favourite players to return to form. Andy Roddick v Scott Draper The 'next big thing' from the USA has developed a handy record on clay this season, winning in Atlanta and Houston, BUT they were very poor strength events (any event where Andrew Ilie is 5th or 2nd seed cannot be classed as a strong formline). Last year in the juniors at Roland Garros, he did reach the quarters, just one month after an arthroscopy, which I tend to rate as slightly better form. To give him any chance in this fortnight though, I'd have liked to see him play in the last few weeks, other than a couple of doubles matches in Dusseldorf last week. Scott Draper is on the comeback trail after a lot of personal heartbreak over the past two years, losing his wife Kellie to cystic fibrosis in 1999. He appears to be finally back into his tennis again, and being part of Australia's winning team at the World Team Cup last week will do him no end of good. Draper's record here is good, having made the fourth round in 1995 and 1996. He is an awkward player to face, and if Roddick's serve is off, there could be an upset here. I'm not suggesting this is a certainty, far from it, but at 9/2, I think that is a value price for the Aussie. 1pt Draper 5.50 at Centrebet Kristian Pless v Jan-Michael Gambill The Danish 20 year-old has a real chance of continuing on from his qualifying form and taking the scalp of a seed in the first round. Pless looked in great touch in defeating Fish, Agenor and Viloca in the past few days, while his oppoent's clay form can only be described as dismal. Gambill is 2-6 on clay this season, defeating Pretzsch and Rios (a few days after his arrest in Rome) in Hamburg, but the list of players he has fallen to does not inspire confidence - Ruud, Coria, Johansson, Clement, Puerta and Kafelnikov. Only Coria could be described as being in great form on clay. Bookmakers are awake to Gambill's poor form on the dirt and you may struggle to find any value. 3pts Pless 3.00 at Intertops |

| Much thanks gentlemen, I feel Agassi will dispatch of the over used and injured legged Ferrero next week. It seems his heavy match load, injured thigh and grueling matches forthcoming could spell disaster for JC Ferrero. Contrasted with Agassi's excellent draw, Costa, Sampras and Rafter. Seems if the well rested perpetually fit Agassi can get past 2rd toughie Costa,he will have an easier road to a potential showdown with JC Ferrero. I respect the sharp difference in clay form this year, but seems obvious 'Dre only cares for the majors. Just my humble opinion. TA

| Actuary, Don't read too much into Ferrero's injury - just a smokescreen. Big punters in the know were backing him to win the title late last week. As for Andre, I'll be backing Costa to beat him in round two, with confidence. |
| |||
| Boris, Good luck, there is of course virtually zero chance one would ever get value on Agassi, seems highly unlikely I would back him, although I obviously feel the inconsistent and temperamental Costa is the wrong side. There is no shot I will take the other, so best of luck, I'd rather be wrong and you profit .TA

| 5-4 +1.64 units Vinciguerra v Marin Up and coming swede is lowly making his mark in the game, he should be much too solid for Marin today. Dosedel v Lapentti Dosedel is 3-0 against Lapentti, and is consistently underrated by bookmakers, no doubt that Lapentti is starting to find form , but the value lies with Dosedel here. Boutter v Costa Inconsistent Frenchman plays claycouirt specialist Costa. Bouuter has plenty of game and should he get on a roll, Costa won't get a look in, worth a bet at the price. Corretja v Zabaleta I like Correctja for the title and he should take the first step against a very disappointing Zabaleta. Goellner v Santoro With three qualifying matches under his belt, Goellner has a real shot at troubling Santoro today. A real prospect a decade ago, but badly hampered by knee injuries, he is a world beater on his day, good value. Hipfl v Safin Hipfl was a finalist in Austria last week, Safin has not played well all year and battled injury, Hipfl took Moya to five sets here two years ago, and he will push Safin as well. Cacic v Montolio Montolio is a very solid claycourter who might make a run this week, but she's just too short, Cacic is gritty and should hang with her. | Unload on Agassi over Boutter,Andre has too much heat,and has hit 2million more balls in his life.Andre is fit for life and will not let Steffi down,Kuerten does not have Agassi will,I cant believe Andre is 6-1 to win this.By the time Andre plays Go-ga,Dre will be the one who is favored.This is not 1993 when the court was molasses,JC Ferrero does not have the entourage necessary to win,Jc is no Sergi Brugera,Andre will be standing tall on the 2nd Sunday. |

| This week 9-8 +2.45 Got away with some poor picks yesterday to make a profit, no value in the mens singles today so my attention focuses on the women. Dechy v Kruger Two players with very similar styles, but Dechy has the advantage of a home ground venue, a slightly better all-court game and certainly much more potential, after a scare against Molik in the opening round, she should find things easier today. Diaz-Oliva v Clijsters Underrated claycourter meets erratic but up and coming superstar, Diaz-Oliva beat Clijsters at their previous meeting and has a chance with Clijsters better suited on faster courts. Chladkova v Kremer Chladkova has been promising to produce for a while and i'm hoping today is the day, Kremer did the job for us on Day one, but she won't be able to dictate this match, and i give Chladkova the nod. Schett v Carlsson Schett was terrific against Venus, and should comfortably dispatch the very pedestrian Carlsson. | with you Jetman on several of those.... from my site - see profile for URL. Kim Clijsters vs Mariana Diaz-Oliva The best value of the day IMO. This pair have met on one previous occasion, just a month ago, with the Argentine successful, 0-6 6-2 6-3 when Clijsters was topseeded. The Belgian girl was impressive in the first round, fighting off the determined challenge of Salerni, and deservedly goes in as favourite, but the price on offer at 5Dimes is simply too big. 4pts Diaz-Oliva at 3.35 5Dimes Lina Krasnouratskaya vs Lenka Nemeckova Another overpriced commodity here in Nemeckova. Unsung, and coming through qualifying, she easily accounted for Rita Kuti Kis, a much improved player who was marked a very short fav. Krasnouratskaya is rated as Kournikova Mark II, very good looking, and she can actually win matches, possibly even a whole tournament. She is young and talented, whether she is good enough to be marked this short against a player in form is yet to be seen. 2pts Nemeckova at 3.40 5Dimes 1pt multi - De los Rios (1.65)/Torrens-Valero(1.72)/Dechy(1.60)/Marrero(1.50) paying 6.81 at Centrebet |

| A couple of selections from the men's draw, the rest are on the site... Xavier Malisse vs Kristian Pless Conclusive first round wins for these European youngsters, Malisse thumping Nicolas Massu, while Pless came from a set down to take out 15th seed Jan Michael Gambill. Malisse's clay season has been in better shape, and undoubtedly he deserves to be favoured, but the Dane is on a four-match streak at Roland Garros, having made it through qualifying, and is in this match with a definite chance. 3pts Pless 3.00 SurreySports (if no longer available, take 2.90 at WSEX) Harel Levy vs Karim Alami Israel's best tennis player in many years, perhaps ever, started his Grand Slam venture in great form, thumping Byron Black 6-1 6-1 6-4. In Rome, he reached the quarter-finals, defeating Sampras, Clavet and Kiefer, none of whom are top-class clay exponents, but all class players that would do his confidence no end of good. Two of his losses this clay season have been to Ferrero, and there's no harm in that. Moroccan Karim Alami has had a poor year by his standards, with a match record of 4-11 before this event. He managed to beat Andrew Ilie last week in three tie-breakers, a player that he normally has the wood over, and made very hard work of Italian Davide Sanguinetti in the first round. This season, he has lost to players to players of the ilk of Malisse, Golmard, El Aynaoui, Santoro, Arazi, Meligeni and Schalken - all handy players, but almost all matches were straight-set defeats. His confidence is shot, and a player like Levy is capable of beating him quite easily. 7pts Levy 1.80 at SportsTAB |

| 12-9 +2.51 Sampras v Blanco Despite Pete's first round struggles, i believe the value lies with him today, Blanco lacks any weapons to trouble Smapras and the fate of the match will rest on Pete's racquet, all in all he played the big points well on Tuesday and i'm content to take the price that he'll scrape thru today. Burgsmuller v El Aynaoui The cunning but very brittle Moroccan will have his hands full with the in-form Burgsmuller. This is a play opposing the Morroccan's fitness as much as anything, and he will struggle backing up after a five set struggle against Medvedev. Safin v Calatrava Could well be back in town , worth a small play at a price that is a touch of value. Black v Schnyder Schnyder has never been back to her best since her alliance with a German "guru" a couple of years ago , at the price she is extremely opposable against a player who continues to improve and thrashed Kristie Boogert in Round 1.
