The Royals reached agreement Tuesday morning with free-agent Matt Stairs on a one-year contract. Terms were not disclosed.
Stairs, 35, is an 11-year veteran who batted .292 last season with 20 homers and 57 RBIs in 121 games at Pittsburgh. He is a left-handed hitter who can play first base and the outfield.
The Royals were also believed close to an agreement Tuesday with free-agent catcher Benito Santiago.
Stairs has a .266 career average with 176 homers and 568 RBIs in 1,046 games. He has played for the Expos, Red Sox, A's, Cubs, Brewers and Pirates.
