Default Who is bigger underachiever, Couples or Love?

Or is the question unfair. When I say underachiever, I am not talking about what they accomplish now necessarily, but looking at their career as a whole. In particular them only having one major. With their talent they should have more than one major.

On pure talent possibly Love, but neither have the MIND it takes to dominate and win many majors - few do! At that elite level they all have GAME, but few have the mental edge like Jack and Tiger or even an Els or Singh. Freddie is too nice and humble and lacks the killer instinct and ego it takes and Davis is kind of weak mentally when in the fire.

Guys like O'Meara, Andy North, JD, Payne Stewart, Larry Nelson have multiple majors.

These guys should be ashamed, especially Freddy who had more chances and usually choked. Was very fortunate to win the one he did.

And unlike some of the guys in their prime today they were around in a relatively easy period as far as competition. You had Faldo there for a while who was real tough. That was about it wasnt it? Norman was around in several majors but only had the two.

Those guys all had a bit of intestinal fortitude, as they say. Some had more guts than game.

The only two I'm uncertain about are North and JD.

North just had a game that was 100% suited to US Open conditions in that he hit it super straight and was a great lag putter from long distances. You don't find that combo too often as most of the straightest hitters are overall weak putters for some reason. North was the ultimate "horse for the setup" guy, IMO!

I love watching JD when he is on and loathe his GIVE UP when he is off. But what I question is could he have won without being drunk? I really think he's one of those guys who may have benefitted from being wasted all the time in that it kept the "mind demons" from coming through as all his brain cells were busy fighting the alcohol - LOL!

Dont like JD's give up either, although think he has improved in that regard.

Dont forget his British Open win came when he was completely sober.

Don't think so aly, he was still tilting heavy when he won the British. It was only his LAST WIN on tour that he was reportedly sober for - remember him saying that himslef, but that is a far different set of nervousness than a major brings.

Good question- I think the answer is Love, I mean he was the natural--perfect upbringing born to be a golfer. I think losing his Dad/Teacher at the point in his career was critical.

You just got to think alot of Couples problems is fighting the back troubles.

buckeye, think you have that backwards. He won on tour last year. Which was long after he admitted to be drinking again. He drank lasy year (and now) and makes no bones about it. It was after the British Open win when he said he didnt really remember his other major. He was definitely sober, by all accounts, back at that time. It was not long after that, he fell off the wagon.

Love by far - Couples has had a lot of problems but Love has the game to beat the best.

On ability he should win 3+ tournaments every year and should be a 4+ major winner in his career. ie a HOF'amer but I can't see him winning another one at present.

Love certainly has more raw ability than VJ and probably Tiger too. The only other players to compare with him in ability are Els and Lefty and they've achieved a lot more than Love.

His odds for tournaments are getting to a stage where you have to bet him just in case he decides to show up with his game.

Easy one...Love. Freddie's physical problems (ie his back) are what brought his career to a halt. Perfect example was Love vs. Tiger in the match play last year. In that environment what in the world is he doing even hearing, let alone responding to, someone in the gallery? He should have been locked and loaded on Tiger.
