Default World Rankings

Must be complete garbage if Angel Cabrera is #14 in them. IMO they are too current performance weighted.

If they are too current performance weighted how is Tiger ranked over VJ?

12 wins to 4 the last year. With one major each?

Agree that Cabrera's ranking is absurd. Think most of them are. Surprised someone hasnt come up with an alternative ranking system. Current one is an utter joke

Tiger has had 3 wins from fewer events thats how Tiger has stayed as close to VJ as he has. All those wins last year are losing value like crazy every week.

Unless they've changed the ranking formula a lot in the last year or two, the system doesn't weight for recency within the last year. One week ago, or fifty-one weeks ago, same difference. Tiger runs equal with Vijay due to strength-of-field distortions.

There was a good article in "Golf Digest" a while back on why the rankings are as bad as they are. (Link to reprint below.)

www.popeofslope.com/worldrankings/rankled.html

As the article notes, the Committee that does the rankings includes a sports agent (now dead), a urologist from the USGA, and a banker from Augusta... but not a single math guy. Hard to believe the ratings would suck.

#PS> Fourteen for Cabrera sounds really high... but I just eyeballing the rankings I can see a half-dozen numbers that are way, way worse. On the high side: DiMarco, David Howell, Parry and Sabbatini. On the low side, Charles Howell and Justin Rose. Cabrera slots in pretty well with Lehman, Funk and Jimenez (all in the top 25) - and isn't distinctly worse than Weir or Leonard.

I pay absolutely ZERO attention to world rankings and when others quote them I just LOL. But I want them to stick around and continue to SUCK. Why? Because some linesmakers actually use them to set lines. So, may they continue to be used for that purpose ad infinitum!!!

Buckeye -

Seriously? That seems a little too good to be true... any chance of you naming names?

I'm not using any criteria for these rankings but my feel for the top 10 is:

1 - VJ - Clear
2 - Woods just ahead of
3 - Lefty
4 - Els
5 - Goosen
6 - Scott

These 6 are well clear in my mind.

The remaining four are hard to pick but I'd say:

Garcia, Harrington, Toms & Appleby or Perry. Donald is close but doesn't win enough for me - same comment applies to DiMarco and Cink.

Love would be up there and has the game for top 4 player but is so out of it at present that I can't include him.
