Default Will these guys ever resurface?

Gets boring talking about Duval. What about these major winners/near major winners. Will they ever do anything of note again?

Paul Lawrie
Brian Watts
Bob May
Len Mattiace
Jean Van De Velde
Ben Curtis

My guess is Len Mattiace is the only one in that group that may do something again. Out of the list, he is the only one that I actually felt bad for when he tanked in the last round of the TPC that year. The brother of a guy I used to play with regularly caddied for him for years. This guy was one of the most generous with his time and money. Top-shelf human being from what I have heard.

Of that list, May and Mattiace were on the only guys who were established second-tier players - the others were consistently borderline guys who had one great week. So it's not like they've got anything to "come back" to. . . they never were anything special.

I thought Mattiace would be back to his best this year, after a transitional '04, but he's actually a full shot worse, at least. . . which is a pretty huge reversal.

May has been out on a Major Medical for like two years - gotta think he's all done.

My new theory on Duval is that he subconsciously likes shooting huge numbers - it appeals to his sense of the absurd. It's like he's declared a one-man war on all the Tour's "These guys are good" PR stuff.

Interesting about Duval. He's like a preacher's kid, son of a pro and all.

Curtis is doing all right, I think. He won a half million last year, not a bad salary. Ben has that major exemption through '08 also. He'll be around and earning for awhile.

If you're wise with the spending, you can live nicely off ONE top 5 a year. For a lot of guys, the dream is gone, they are just trying to earn a living, and play every shot like it's for a few grand.

I think Curtis will win again, it may just take a while and very well may never be another major. I also think Lawrie has a chance to win again down the line and he does surface on teh Euro tour leaderboard every so often - or had been.

VanDeFolde has even had a decent tourney or two since his collapse ( the worst in sports history IMO given he was just one hole away and he and caddie both mentally lost it over and over in that one hole ). But I doubt he'll ever contend for a major again and the others seem doubtful for much of anything.

But in golf it just takes one HOT WEEK. If a "shell of himself" Johnny Miller can win in his one tourney a year at Pebble then ANYTHING is possible in golf!

The real tragedy about Van De Velde, is he played 71 of the greatest holes I have ever seen. Especially with his putting.

The course was an absolute bear (made Shinnecock look easy). Guy made every putt all week.

The thing that gets lost is how unlucky he was. I mean his first and second shots were poor mentally, but his second shot cleared the water. He was home free. But his ball hit a temporary scoreboard and bounced all the way back on the other side of the creek. From there he had little chance.

Think Curtis was an absolute fluke. Dont think he will win again. Lawrie looks to be done now as does Mattiace. Its the Mike Donald syndrome.

Brian Watts has made more money overseas than anybody. He is betting golf full time pretty much now, I think.

Watched a great interview with Duval on the golf channel before the TPC. He says that he is close to hitting it like he used to but cannot figure out how to score. He said the tough thing is that all the fans out there are so encouraging to him. His wife is having a very difficult pregnancy and compared to her toughness he said posting 86's is not that hard. I hope he gets it figured, because he was very genuine. If he didn't care he could just NC every where.

The Lawrie- British Open win was really a crap shoot- that course is ridiculous and it was a matter of who got lucky last to win. My dislike of the British Open courses is well documented and have amended my position to it just takes a different kind of golfer to win the tourney.

The encouraging thing about Duval is he is making a decent share of birdies for someone shooting so high. He clearly can clearly put together two or three good shots in a row. Its the doubles and triples which are killing him.

Know I am in the minority but really think he will be back. Not saying number one in the world, but will win again. Yeah he is a good dude. Very misunderstood.

Lawrie pulled a Van de Velde. At 17. Triple bogey to lose by one.

I think Barry Lane took a quad on the last hole

I hope Duval is back as well. When Finch had his disaster he was quitting and not posting scores, it seems like Duval will post big numbers, which takes a ton of guts. A former no. 1 posting scores regularly in the 80's, take a lot of guts, I think. I think you will see him make a nice run this year eventually.

May is done. Saw him practice a few times a while back and he seems to know he's done.

Brian Watts shot 152 at the Crowns this week- I bet he got injured in the past couple of years.

Jean Van de Velde- is having a decent tourney this week- should get a top 20 finish- he is coming off serious injuries the past two years.
