I played at Riviera this past weekend in a Corporate Event. I have played there the last four years in this same event, and this year the course is definitely in different condition.
The freeze that we had in So Cal back in January really had an impact on the course. The kakuya grass is not as bad as it normally is. As a matter of fact, most of it is dead. As you walk around the greens you basically see dead grass mixed in the rough. Moreover, the lack of rain (we have had only two or three rainy days since 1/1), has hampered the growth of the rough. It is pretty bad to the right of the #1 fairway, and on both sides of #2, otherwise, it is not even close to what it has been the last couple of years.
Finally, the greens. The greens were rock hard. It was almost impossible to spin a shot. The rumor around the clubhouse is that they were going to quicken them up, as well as leaving them firm to counter the lack of rough.
The fairways were immaculate, perfect lies everywhere.
I think the advantage goes to the guy who has a solid short game, and is accurate with the driver. Though the rough is not bad, remember this is an old course and the trees are big and in your way! 8 of the top 9 players in the world are expected - should be a fantastic tournament. Weather is not supposed to be a factor until Sunday when there is a possibility of rain - otherwise nothing but sun (supposed to be pushing 80 on Friday!)
BVP to win 102.50. This guy has played this course very well the last 2 years, and he can birdie in droves. If Bo gets hot, you're going to get your money's worth of thrills here.
Barlow, top 10. He got top 5 last year, I think, and he's burning it up, so far, this year. 12.65
Rollins over Appleby -105 Got the worst of the line move here, there are some +105's out there still, I think. Rollins, although not a big name golfer, or even a name golfer, is hotter than a 2 peckered billy goat, right now. Played very well last year here too. Appleby has been idle for the most part and I'm hoping for some or a lot of rust.
BVP over Sutherland -125 I can't ever remember Kevin having 2 good tournys in a row. Line has moved to -135 a while ago.
Weir to miss cut---I didn't play this, but if ever a time to do it, it's now, during the swing change. Missed cut last week, and it wasn't close. I believe you can get around 3-1.
If WSX ever gets around to posting thier offerings, I may make a few more moves, or 1 or 2 Round 1 plays. Have to wait. Post later if I do.
I like Weir +3500 ... accurate driver regardless of swing changes.. solid bounceback player... see a top 10 for em...
