Default RCMP clamping down on satellite piracy

RCMP clamping down on satellite piracy

Thursday, April 22, 2004
The RCMP have begun a crackdown on satellite pirates in the Montreal and Quebec City regions.

According to a Radio-Canada report, nine warrants have been issued and several people have been arested. The Mounties have also seized satellite decoders and pirated access cards.

Canadian broadcasters estimate that there are at least 1 million illegal satellite systems in the country. They say it costs their industry about $400 million per year.

The RCMP say that even though the penalties for stealing satellite signals are small, the selling of pirated equipment is a major source of financing for organized crime.
