Seven of the eight men arrested as a result of a yearlong State Police investigation into illegal gambling were out on bond Wednesday.
Tuesday, troopers in the Gaming Enforcement Division confiscated $35,000 and arrested eight men they said were involved in bookmaking activities in St. James and Terrebonne parishes.
Gamblers were betting on three-team parlays in college and professional sports, Senior Trooper Dwight Robinette Jr. said.
The operation began at the Easy Does It Club in the St. James Parish town of Lutcher and expanded to N&N Auto Sales of Houma in Terrebonne Parish, Robinette said.
Those arrested and booked with violating the Louisiana Revised Statue 14:90, a gambling violation punishable by a fine of up to $5,000 or a prison term of up to five years, are:
n Lynn Naquin, 54, Theriot, who posted a $35,000 surety bond. Naquin also was booked with possession of cocaine and drug paraphernalia.
Those who posted a $25,000 bond are:
Charles Brack, 65, Lutcher.
Daniel "Polo" Veron, 59, Lutcher.
Hendricks "Pecker" Veron, 69, Lutcher.
Ernest Woodland, 60, Lutcher.
Kent Haydel, 50, Gonzales.
Karl Oubre, 56, Darrow.
James "Gold Dust" Banks, 38, Lutcher, remained incarcerated Wednesday in the St. James Parish Jail on a $25,000 bond.
Initially, state troopers said they seized $18,000 when they executed warrants in making the arrests. However, Robinette said Wednesday that $35,000 was confiscated.
In the gambling operation, all three sports teams bet on had to win for the gamblers to be paid, which led to better payouts but made the odds of winning less, State Police said. |
