Sounds like it was Omaha or Stud-- it could be the dealers fault for pitching them in the wrong place.
The wording in the OP is confusing. It seems to be written by someone is familiar with neither English, poker, nor anatomy (between the knuckle and the wrist???).

I took it that "I can't see his cards," was said at the showdown, which would explain why the dealer would be moving someone's cards around.

It would also explain why a player would react angrily if he thought the dealer was reaching to muck the winning hand. The player has a responsibility to protect his cards until he is shipped the pot.

A friend of mine was once dealing in such a situation. When Seat 3 pointed to Seat 9's cards and said, "Move his cards down here, I can't see them," my friend declined. Instead, my friend invited Seat 3 to get up and walk around the table if that would help him get a better look at Seat 9's cards, because he wasn't touching that man's cards until the pot had been pushed (and he wasn't pushing the pot until all losing hands had been mucked).

I was dealing a big PLO game once. Two players in the hand on the flop. First player asked the Second player, "How much have you got?" Second player lifted his hands, to let him see his stack.

This wasn't specific enough, so the First player said to me, "Count his chips."

I know better than to put my hands on somebody else's money, so I never even reached for the Second player's stack. But before I could respond, the second player picked up a stack of red chips, and held them firmly in his hand, with his thumb on one end.

"What are you doing?", asked a bystander.

"I'm getting ready to break that dealer's hand, if he tries to touch my money."

I just laughed. "You didn't notice that I never even started to reach for your money?"

EDIT: I just read it again, it says it happened at showdown.
