U.S. uses BetonSports as Pawn in Online Gambling Case (Only BoS has plead guilty, DC & Kaplan are pleading not-guilty)
The United States desperately wants to be able to prosecute and convict David Carruthers and Gary Kaplan, who are both former Betonsports officers and both have been charged with money laundering, racketeering and many other felonies.
Both men have pleaded not guilty and it is believed that Betonsports Plc pleaded guilty to racketeering and will not face criminal prosecution in exchange of cooperating with the prosecutions case against Carruthers and Kaplan.
Betonsports admitted in federal court that the gambling enterprise began as an illegal sports betting business in New York City in the early 1990s. After its founder's arrest on New York State gambling charges in May 1993, the founder relocated his operation to Florida, continuing to take sports wagers from bettors in New York by telephone. In 1995, the gambling operation moved to Aruba, in the West Indies and established toll-free telephone services to take sports wagers from gamblers in the U.S. and started to accept sports wagers through the Internet. In 1997, the gambling enterprise relocated to Antigua, and then to Costa Rica.
David Carruthers remains under house arrest, out on one million dollar bond awaiting trial. Kaplan remains in custody and has a bail hearing scheduled for today in St. Louis Federal court.
Momentum has been picking up steam against the UIGEA (Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006). Several United States Representatives have spoke out publicly and introduced new bills, legalizing or calling for a study of internet gambling.
The UIGEA was attached to a Port Security bill at the 11th hour and signed in to law in October of 2006 by President Bush. The internet gambling ban was not even debated and Americans are outraged over freedoms being taken away from Americans even though the ban is a contradiction of most gambling laws within the United States. Over 2/3 of the United States have some forms of legalized gambling.
The United States would like people to believe that all online gambling companies operate illegally like Betonsports has admitted in court. Like Enron all industries have criminals that make a bad name for others but in reality many offshore gambling companies are stand-up business men who operate legally outside the United States. The WTO has ruled that the U.S ban on internet gambling is illegal itself and it's believed that both Carruthers and Kaplan will use the WTO as part of the defense.
