Default Backup Catchers

Today is the first full Sunday of MLB action in the 2007 season, so it is a good time to be cognizant of one particular factor in teams' depth charts: backup catchers. Traditionally, a backup catcher plays in a day game when the team played a night game the evening before. Often (but not always) that day is Sunday. Inserting a backup catcher can change the value of an offence dramatically - and if you can anticipate the day a backup catcher plays before the lineups are posted, you can sometimes get a good jump on the line.

So here is the current list of backup catcher run values (includes offence only) relative to the starting catcher, taken from the numbers that I use. The numbers represent the difference in expected runs scored for the team with the backup catcher rather than the starter.

Arz Snyder:Montero +.02

Sea Johjima:Clement -.18
StL Molina:Bennett -.12
TB Navarro:Paul -.17
Tex Laird:Ojeda -.13
Tor Zaun:Phillips -.34

As you can see, sometimes it makes a big difference.

Hope this helps.
